Democrats Deliver Response to Trump's Prime Time Address

Tuesday on Fox News Channel's "Hannity" after President Donald Trump's Oval Office address and the joint response given by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), syndicated conservative talker Mark Levin praised Trump for the address but excoriated Schumer and Pelosi for their response.

In his first national address from the Oval Office, the president gave no indication he was softening his stance that the partial government shutdown would continue without money for the wall.

Past meetings with Democrats have resulted in both sides digging in, with Trump insisting on almost $6 billion for a border wall and Democrats saying they won't entertain the discussion until Congress passes and Trump signs a package re-opening shuttered federal agencies.

Democrats in response accused Trump appealing to "fear, not facts" and manufacturing a border crisis for political gain.

Mr Schumer said the president abruptly left when Mrs Pelosi said she would not approve of any wall funding.

Was last night a complete wash that didn't make any sense?

Trump and Vice President Mike Pence met with Senate Republicans during their weekly luncheon after a handful of them said publicly that the president should compromise with congressional Democrats rather than hold firm to his demand for $5.7 billion for his proposed U.S. -Mexico border barrier.

That's because the federal government has been partially shutdown for over two weeks.

"On Day One of the new Congress, the House passed bipartisan legislation that honors our responsibility to protect the American people with funding for smart, effective border security solutions - just not the President's wasteful and ineffective wall".

Hundreds of thousands of federal employees who are working without pay will miss their pay cheque this week.

Trump argued Tuesday night that the wall was needed to resolve what he called a security and humanitarian "crisis".

The president often highlights such incidents, though studies over several years have found immigrants are less likely to commit crimes than people born in the United States.

The list of networks that confirmed they're carrying the address includes: ABC, CBS, CNN, NBC, PBS, CNN, Fox News, Fox Business and MSNBC.

Trump sought to put the blame on Democrats for the standoff, saying they "will not fund border security".

But Murkowski told reporters that six shuttered federal departments other than the Department of Homeland Security "don't have anything to do with border security". The administration says it will act on its own to ensure the refunds. If they do, it would be a highly unusual move - Republicans never received equal time after former President Barack Obama's numerous addresses to the nation.
