Germany's Angelique Kerber and Alexander Zverev earned the chance to avenge their defeat in last year's Hopman Cup final by defeating Australia 2-1 at the mixed teams tournament on Friday.

Federer's three Hopman Cup titles is more than any other player.

World number two Kerber was too good for the 15th-ranked Barty in the opening match, winning 6-4, 6-4. At the event two years ago, the German had defeated Team Switzerland and it was ever so close this time again coming down to just one point in the Fast4 format in the deciding mixed doubles match.

Federer will be aiming for a third successive Australian Open and looked in impressive touch in claiming a second Hopman Cup, winning all four of his singles matches as he prepared for the year's first Grand Slam in Melbourne later this month.

It was the second straight year Germany had lost to Switzerland in the final, but Zverev is in much better form this summer. Then Bencic played a couple of weak net shots to put Federer in trouble on serve, and the Germans were swift to take advantage with a sizzling return to break, 4-1.

"I'm one of the top 10 favourites". Bencic sealed a final love break of Kerber with a forehand victor, 4-0.

The 31st edition of the mixed-teams tournament has been its best one, featuring record crowds and attracting worldwide interest when Serena Williams played mixed doubles against Roger Federer.

The final mix took place in a dramatic struggle and ended with the victory of Switzerland at the decisive tie-break (4:0, 1:4, 4:3).

With both Germany and Australia undefeated in the competition so far, the final match of Group A would determine who would meet the Swiss in the final of the mixed tennis tournament at the RAC Arena in Perth.

Critical was Kerber's ability to convert all 4 of her break points during the match, while Bencic was only successful on two of 7.

It wasn't until Kerber's third chance that a backhand victor secured the 6-4, 7-6 (8/6) win.

"I'm happy I'm feeling this good and playing as well as I am", he said. The last point was won by Sakkari that surprised Federer with a fantastic backhand and Stefanos couldn't contain his joy repeatedly hug and kiss Maria on court.
