Kliff Kingsbury to interview; Cardinals have ‘strong mutual interest’

NFL FOX's Jay Glazer tweeted Monday afternoon that the ex-Texas Tech head coach is in fact interviewing for NFL head coaching jobs despite USC denying him permission to do so. The news of an impending interview with the Cardinals broke on January 1, but reports surfaced that USC was denying Kingsbury from interviewing.

In an interview with ESPN, Kingsbury opened up on being fired from Texas Tech and why he accepted the job at USC.

According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, there's a chance.

Update, 12:15 p.m., January 5: ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that USC has denied permission to the New York Jets and Arizona Cardinals to interview its new offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury. He's already interviewed with the Packers and turned down a request from the Cincinnati Bengals.

The New York Jets had also previously expressed interest in Kingsbury as a head coaching candidate.

On Sunday, he reported the Patriots are preparing for Josh McDaniels to leave after this season and a name to keep an eye on to replace him is Kliff Kingsbury, who the Patriots selected in the sixth round of the 2003 draft. But he went 35-40 over six seasons as head coach and was let go after a 5-7 campaign in 2018.

Kingsbury joined Clay Helton's staff in early December. He was a quarterback at Texas Tech and spent time as a QB with the Jets, New England Patriots and New Orleans Saints.

"He's only been there a month and he's been blocked from interviewing from head coaching jobs".

Kingsbury has coached quarterbacks with National Football League experience during his time in college, including Case Keenum and Johnny Manziel as an assistant coach with Houston and Texas A&M.
