Sheriff: Rooney arrested in December for public swearing, intoxication

Court records obtained by Washington ABC 7 News and The Athletic showed that Rooney was arrested in Loudon County, Virginia, on December 16 for cursing and intoxication, a misdemeanour for which he was released from custody on his own recognisance before paying the fine and court costs on Friday.

He was released without bail and paid the small fine on January 4th, according to legal documents.

Loudoun County Sheriff's Office confirmed he had been arrested and court files reveal he had to pay a find of $25.

The spokesman said: 'Wayne took a prescribed amount of sleeping tablets mixed with some alcohol consumption and consequently was disorientated on arrival.

The 33-year-old scored 12 goals and laid on six assists in 21 appearances as DC United progressed to the MLS play-offs last season.

DC United said they were aware of the reports of Rooney's arrest in a statement issued to U.S. media.

He holds the record for the most goals for England's global team and for Premier League club Manchester United, and he helped United win five English Premier League titles, the Champions League, Europa League and the FA Cup. "We understand the media's interest in this matter but we believe this is a private matter for Wayne that DC United will handle internally. No further comment will be made".
