Barcelona forward Messi - a five-time victor of the Balon d'Or, awarded to the world's best player - is not even rated in the top three of football's greatest players by the 78-year-old Brazilian.

One of the greatest footballer of all time, Pele from Brazil has given his verdict on what he thinks about his comparison with Messi.

He continued: "How can you compare?"

Messi this week missed out on netting a sixth Ballon d'Or for the world's best player, and incredibly only finished fifth on the list as Croatia and Real Madrid playmaker Luka Modric walked home with the accolade.

The Brazilian lifted three in 1958, 1962 and 1970, while Messi has failed to win one, losing in the 2014 final to Germany.

O Rei also said he is in better health after some surgeries over the past year, but is not yet 100%. For me Maradona was one of the best.

But Pele said he rates the 1986 World Cup victor - as well as two other former players - higher than Messi.

"[Franz] Beckenbauer, [Johan] Cruyff are also better".

Pele, meanwhile, said no one should try to compare him with Messi, suggesting their skillset was completely different.

But, Pele has also chosen Messi over Ronaldo in the past, for the Argentine's all-round talent compared to his rival's pure goalscoring ability.

Messi has not been the tallest or dominant player in world football but has won several accolades and trophies in world football. "I talked to him, I told him that in football, he's got it".

"I told him he had football to spare, I've been to Europe twice with him recently, we have discussed it and I explained it to him".

"You mention several names, but from the last 10 or 15 years, I think Messi's been the most consistent player, without doubt". "If you ask me, 'Was he better than Messi?' Yes, he was".
