Yet Western Washington's humble Americana star found herself - deservedly so - nominated for a whopping six awards, trailing only King Kendrick (eight) and the "God's Plan" rapper (seven) who recently rocked the Tacoma Dome.

Noah Shebib, another one of Drake's collaborators, is recognized with four nominations for songs from the Scorpion album. If Lamar felt like he got snubbed a year ago, then he'll feel better about the 2019 Grammys, as he earned more nominations than anybody else, with eight total.

The "Panther" nomination would give Lamar a chance to win album of the year after losing three times.

Following Lamar, Drake - the year's most successful artist - earned seven nominations.

Perennial favorite Taylor Swift appeared to fall out of grace, however, earning just one nomination for Best Pop Vocal Album for "Reputation". Five other songs scored nominations in both categories, including Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper's "Shallow" from "A Star Is Born"; Childish Gambino's "This Is America"; Drake's "God's Plan"; Zedd, Maren Morris and Grey's "The Middle"; and Carlile's "The Joke".

Violinist Christina Day Martinson, from Saskatchewan, is nominated in the classical instrumental solo category for Biber: The Mystery Sonatas with the Boston Baroque.

As the New York Times notes, women also lead in some of the biggest categories this year; the awards show received criticism for a lack of diversity in the past.

Grande, who on Thursday won Billboard's Woman of the Year accolade, and Cuban-born Cabello were relegated to two apiece in the pop album and pop single categories. Their direct competitors are Gregory Porter, for Nat "King" Cole & Me, as well as Seal, Barbra Streisand and Willie Nelson, for albums largely featuring songbook standards.

Kanye West's latest effort Ye was also snubbed, but he did receive a nod for Producer of the Year, following his run of executive producing a total of five albums over the course of the last six months.

Toronto music scholar and past Grammy-winner Rob Bowman is part of the team behind best historical album contender Any Other Way, a compilation of music by 1960s soul singer Jackie Shane.
