Trump White House Chief of Staff John Kelly is on his way out, according to CNN.

Sources tell CNN the White House had first fought the request to interview Kelly, but finally relented.

Trump ignored the rumors as he left the White House, but teased reporters with an important announcement about the future of his Joint Chiefs of Staff. Kelly is a retired four-star General. Former White House Counsel Don McGahn was likewise forced out of his job after it was reported that he had cooperated extensively in Mueller's probe.

Kelly's interview is of particular note, as he was appointed by the president in the summer of 2017, while numerous other Trump-tied figures caught in the Mueller probe are being questioned about their time with Trump during the 2016 election.

CNN reports Kelly and President Donald Trump have reached a stalemate in their relationship and it is no longer seen as tenable by either party.

The interview took place in recent months, the news network said, attributing the information to three people with knowledge of the matter. The lights were off in his West Wing office.

The officials confirmed the decision Friday on condition of anonymity because it had not been announced.

Among White House officials, however, there is broad consensus that his days as chief of staff are numbered. Trump nominated him for a second two-year term last year.

"Now is the best opportunity to be laser-focused on further building out the political infrastructure that will support victory for President Trump and the GOP in 2020", campaign manager Brad Parscale said in a statement.
