India Opener Gautam Gambhir Announces Retirement From All Forms of Cricket

"And with one heavy heart, I've decided to make an announcement that I've dreaded all my life". His shining moment may be the 2011 World Cup where he scored 97 from 122 balls in the final against Sri Lanka to steer India to first title since 1983.

In the heartfelt video, Gambhir said: "After more than 15 years of playing for my country, I want to retire from this lovely game". His last match will be Delhi's Ranji Trophy match against Andhra at his home ground, Feroz Shah Kotla, beginning on December 6. Gambhir last featured for the national side against England in a Test match at Rajkot.

However, a couple of years after the World Cup heroic, Gambhir lost his place in the team.

In total, he played 58 Tests, scoring over 4,000 runs at an average 41.95, including nine centuries and 22 half-centuries.

Gambhir played nearly 250 times for his country across all formats, including 58 Tests and 147 ODIs. During this period, Gambhir also played what is commonly regarded as his greatest Test innings, staying at the crease for 643 minutes while making 137 when India were following-on against New Zealand in Napier. He scored over 10,000 global runs. "But obviously with a few more wins for India, a few more hundreds and in the next life may be a few 5-wicket hauls as well", an emotional Gambhir said in the video.

"It slapped me hard when I got those three ducks in a row in 2014 IPL".

"I was searching for my confidence in that deep, dark pit but I could only lay my hands on the same sharp, disturbing noise".

Before the 2018 IPL auctions, he chose to part ways with the franchise in order to make himself available for his home team Delhi.

Recalling his most affectionate time, Gambhir said: "Two world cups and highest run-getter in the final of both these games".

Gambhir also played in 37 T20Is, top-scoring in the 2007 World T20 final against Pakistan when India became champions in the inaugural edition. "I think someone up there was writing my script but looks like now he has ran out of his ink!", the former India captain added.
