Tumblr announces "adult content" ban that starts in two weeks

But as Tumblr itself is suggesting, "There are no shortage of sites on the internet that feature adult content". Posts will instead be made private until December 17, so users have a short window to preserve their content before it's deleted from the platform.

Tumblr's announcement follows Apple's ban of the app on their App Store in November after child sexual abuse material was found on the platform.

Tumblr CEO Jeff D'Onofrio also posted about the policy change, writing that "as Tumblr continues to grow and evolve, and our understanding of our impact on our world becomes clearer, we have a responsibility to consider that impact across different age groups, demographics, cultures and mindsets". "Adult content will no longer be allowed here", the company flatly states in a blog post set to be published on Monday'.

Under the new policy, anything considered "adult content" is banned, which Tumblr defines as images, videos, and GIFs of "real-life human genitals or female-presenting nipples".

Users are not able to appeal flagged contents that were reblogged by them, but Tumblr stated that those contents will still appear on users' flagged content list. "We will leave it to them and focus our efforts on creating the most welcoming environment possible for our community".

That discovery led Apple to, unsurprisingly, remove Tumblr from the App Store altogether.

Tumblr said that it would make exceptions for photos of exposed female breasts in the context of breastfeeding, childbirth and other health-related subjects. Tumblr's new ownership, under Verizon's Oath brand, has been working on changing things behind-the-scenes for awhile now, but it looks like the changes are getting more aggressive as it aims the Tumblr ship in a slightly new direction. Written erotica, nudity found in art, and "nudity related to political or newsworthy speech" (which seems specific and rare) can be posted freely, without need to warn admin or appeal.
