US President Donald Trump sent a letter to Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan requesting his country's help to end the almost two-decades long conflict in Afghanistan, just weeks after engaging in a Twitter spat with the Pakistani leader. In the letter, Trump asked Pakistan to play its role in Afghan peace talks which are aimed at catalysing an end to the 17-year invasion of Afghanistan by U.S. troops.

Ever since the Twitter war between US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Imran Khan, the relations between the two countries have been quite strenuous.

Pakistan must take on a substantive role in peace talks with the Taliban if the war in neighbouring Afghanistan is to be ended, he said.

Khan revealed to a group of local journalists that he received the letter Monday morning and promised Pakistan will make "all possible efforts" to help with the Afghan peace process.

Pakistan's foreign ministry quoted Mr Trump as saying in the letter that he considers his most important regional priority achieving a negotiated settlement to the Afghan war and that he was seeking Pakistan's support and facilitation toward that goal.

Ties between the USA and Pakistan strained after Trump, while announcing his Afghanistan and South Asia policy in August past year, hit out at Pakistan for providing safe havens to "agents of chaos" that kill Americans in Afghanistan and warned Islamabad that it has "much to lose" by harbouring terrorists. "Peace and stability in Afghanistan remains a shared responsibility", Faisal concluded.

The Pakistani leader insisted his country was being made "a scapegoat" for USA military "failures" in Afghanistan.

An American Embassy spokesman in Islamabad when contacted for a confirmation declined to comment.

The development comes as Washington steps up efforts to hold peace talks with the resurgent Taliban, more than 17 years after the invasion of Afghanistan.

Khalilzad will meet with Afghan government officials and other interested parties to support and facilitate an inclusive peace process in Afghanistan, empowering the Afghan people to decide their nation's fate, the statement said.

The State Department said he will travel to Pakistan, Afghanistan, Russia, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Belgium, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar this month.

Mr Khan at the time stressed the United States had provided what he described as a minuscule 20 billion U.S. dollars in aid to Pakistan.
