George Bush Senior dies aged 94

The 41st president of the USA served from 1989 to 1993, and eight years later watched his son George W became the 43rd president.

His death at 10:10 p.m.

His death was announced on behalf of George W.by spokesman Jim McGrath.

The cause of his death was not immediately known.

"George H.W. Bush was a man of the highest character and the best dad a son or daughter could ask for", he added. Not only was he the 41st President of the United States, he served as Vice President under Ronald Reagan for two terms, from 1981 to 1989, and his eldest son George Jnr also attained the White House as the 43rd President.

Mr Bush lost his bid for re-election to Bill Clinton in a campaign in which businessman H Ross Perot took nearly 19% of the vote as an independent candidate.

In April, a day after attending his wife's funeral, he was treated for an infection that had spread to his blood.

Paying tribute to Mr Bush, current USA president Donald Trump praised his "sound judgment, common sense and unflappable leadership".

Following Mr Clinton's presidency, his son, George W Bush, served two terms as President with his first term taking place during the September 11 attacks.

He also had been joined by Barbara for the ceremonial coin toss when Houston hosted the Super Bowl in February 2017.

"What a life. full of love of family. strong faith", former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin tweeted. George H. Bush held a steadfast belief in a greater calling, underlined by his service to our country as a World War II hero, public servant, elected official and through countless philanthropic efforts.

By then, Bush's son, George W. Bush, was in his second term in the White House, having taken the U.S. to war against Iraq for a second time in 2003, and eclipsing his father's record by winning re-election in 2004.

"A real transition, one might say, came with the conclusion of Bush's term", says presidential historian Robert Dallek.

Ronald Reagan, the former actor and California governor, vanquished him in the Republican primaries but chose Bush as his running mate, hoping Bush's reputation as a moderate would balance his own hard, conservative image. He flew a total of 58 combat missions during World War II, including one where he was shot down by Japanese forces.

But Bush's foreign affairs victories were overshadowed by a stagnant economy at home.

Bush, who was president from 1989 to 1993, was 94.

He had to ditch one plane in the Pacific and was shot down on September 2, 1944, while completing a bombing run against a Japanese radio tower.

Bush was inspired by a speech at Phillips Academy Andover given by Henry L. Stimson, a two-time secretary of war and "kind of a god in those Northeastern circles", says Geoffrey Kabaservice, author of Rule and Ruin, a book about moderate Republicanism.

After graduating from Yale University and venturing into the oil business, Bush jumped into politics and eventually became a congressman, representing the 7th Congressional District in Texas.

As president, Bush launched the "Points of Light" initiative to promote volunteerism and community service across the country.
