"The Commercial Lunar Payload Services contracts are indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity contracts with a combined maximum contract value of $2.6 billion during the next 10 years", said a NASA statement. Robotic CLPS payload deliveries on Peregrine will be a vital bridge to a future human return to the Moon, and an important capability in NASA's Moon to Mars exploration campaign.

The program is part of the agency's effort to work with commercial aerospace firms.

NASA already is utilizing the private sector on a commercial basis.

Astrobiotic Technology Inc. of Pittsburgh; Deep Space Systems of Littleton, Colorado; Draper of Cambridge, Massachusetts; Firefly Aerospace Inc. of Cedar Park, Texas; Intuitive Machines of Houston; Lockheed Martin of Littleton; Masten Space Systems Inc. of Mojave, California; Moon Express of Cape Canaveral, Florida and Orbit Beyond of Edison, New Jersey. Insight arrived at Mars on Monday. The other companies include major defense company Lockheed Martin, as well as some startups.

Astrobotic Technology has built a lander called Peregrine, and have obtained backing from NASA to create a standalone system to land on the moon.

"We didn't want to wait until after there's an accident, because we don't believe there's going to be an accident, but we wanted to make sure that we do that assessment early and not after the fact".

"I will tell you that was not helpful", Bridenstine told assembled reporters at a press gathering at NASA HQ. "We've had a number of conversations", he said adding, "I will tell you, he is as committed to safety as anybody, and he understands that that was not appropriate behavior, and you won't be seeing that again".

The Commercial Crew Program, developed under President Barack Obama, will pay companies to transport human crews.

"There isn't a direct connection to Orion, but this offering does pull from our planetary heritage overall". The companies also have to raise money for, and build, their landers: by and large what they offered were concept art and mockups, with designs still no further along than the critical design review level of maturity.

The Space Policy Directive was born from the recommendations provided during the first meeting of the new National Space Council, a group under the US Department of Commerce's Office of Space Commerce.

NASA astronaut Bruce McCandless II performs extra-vehicular activity with a Manned Maneuvering Unit during the STS-41-B mission, February 1984. He passed away on December 21, 2017 at the age of 80. Draper is another long-time space contractor in the CLPS program. The goal of the flight, namely, "the implementation of the landing on the moon and return to Earth" was achieved.

America's next Moon landing will be made by private companies - not NASA.

The earliest these companies could fly their wares with NASA is 2019.

"Today's announcement marks tangible progress in America's return to the Moon's surface to stay", announced Bridenstine during a public event held Thursday.

The goal is to get small science and technology experiments to the surface of the moon as soon as possible. SpaceX has been a hugely valuable partner for NASA, but launching unmanned cargo ships into space is one thing.
