PG&E agreed to pay more than $24 million in damages to Butte County residents in the 2015 Butte Fire, and the troubled utility is also facing billions in potential liability over 2017 wildfires in Northern California.

Almost 400 people searched for victims amid the scorched debris in Paradise on Sunday, wading through ash that officials say could turn into a thick paste, the Associated Press reported. When no remains were found, they spray-painted a large, orange "0" near the house. Robert Panak, a volunteer on a different team from Napa County, spent the morning searching homes, but didn't find any remains. "I hope the president consults some experts, maybe talks to folks who actually know something about wildfires, and really stop believing these freaky theories that he has".

The remains of 77 people have been recovered after California's deadliest wildfire, with nearly 1,000 people listed as missing.

Honea said it was possible authorities might never have a final total of those killed in the Paradise fire.

California, the largest and wealthiest USA state, is regularly plagued by wildfires, but the Camp Fire has been unprecedented. Some went to homes where they had received tips that someone might have died.

Update: The Woolsey Fire is now 94 percent contained at 151 square miles.

There are now 80 confirmed deaths and the names of 1,000 people remain on a missing list from the wildfires.

As California comes to terms with the deadliest wildfires in its history, US President Donald Trump has offered a solution to the problem.

"His general sentiment is correct - that we need to manage fuels", said Yana Valachovic, a forest adviser with the University of California's Cooperative Extension program. I pay tribute to the courage and dedication of the United States emergency services and the volunteers that have provided support.

He also recalled telling Trump that Finns "take care of our forests". Brown said Sunday he had been told the fires had spread "a football length - 100 yards - a second".
