"If you do events do it big", Kermode said, adding that timing wasn't a factor for the ATP Cup given that it exists within the framework of the Tour.

A revamped Davis Cup tournament will take place from November 2019, bringing together 18 nations in one place for a week at the end of the season.

The tournament with 24 teams of up to five players will face off in January 2020, but with the Davis Cup being held in November, starting in 2019, the calendar will jammed with two major team events in the span of six weeks. We know from our extensive discussions with the players that the ATP Cup will provide a great way for them to open their season.

Speaking on Wednesday, world No 1 Novak Djokovic had voiced his fears about the future of the 118-year-old Davis Cup competition, claiming two similar events in the space of six weeks was "not sustainable".

Chris Kermode, ATP Executive Chairman and President, said the team event was part of the Tour's attempt to grow the sport, and has been in the woodworks for nearly five years.

The first two editions of the new format will be held in Madrid in '19 and '20.

As well as cash, the ATP Cup, being run in conjunction with Tennis Australia, is offering up to 750 ranking points - a huge incentive for the players. We dream of getting the colour of our countries on our tracksuit and going out on the court and playing for teams rather than ourselves", he said, "We are part of an individual sport so for the majority of the time we are playing at an individual event.

Men's Tour chief Chris Kermode has rejected suggestions of an ATP "land grab" when launching a new $US15 million ($A21 million) team competition to start in Australia in January 2020.

Burnout claims continue as Novak Djokovic beats Alexander Zverev at ATP finals
The Croat's defeat by Zverev - a repeat of his loss to the German 12 months ago - means he is 1-9 for the tournament. But Cilic took the next two to win 6-7 (2), 6-3 and 6-4 in two hours and 14 minutes, reports Efe nws.

"I like that it's owned by ATP, by the players, and that we have ranking points, and it's going to be the best way to kick start the season", said Djokovic, Serbia's 14-time Grand Slam champion who is also competing at the ATP Finals.

The tournament will lead into Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the season, which takes place in Melbourne in late January. "The issue is timing, being so close, I get that", Kermode told a news conference, following a video collage of players pledging their support to the ATP Cup.

Details of the ATP Cup were revealed at a news conference at London's O2 Arena on Thursday where Kermode was joined by Tennis Australia CEO Craig Tiley and world number one Novak Djokovic. It will happen that we will have two average events.

Djokovic also said fans should be patient with the likes of Zverev and fellow youngsters like Croatia's Borna Coric and Greece's Stefanos Tsitsipas as they seek to make their breakthroughs in the sport's biggest events. And money talks. Gerard Pique's investment group Kosmos is willing to invest $3bn over 25 years via its Davis Cup partnership with the ITF.

Next year's new-look Davis Cup finals will be held in Madrid, featuring 18 teams, from Nov 18 to 24.

The tournament will split 24 countries into six groups in a round robin format, before a knock-out phase determines the overall victor.

"We want to keep growing tennis, give the players an environment where they can perform to the best of their abilities and then ensure they are appropriately appreciated and rewarded".

Qualification for the ATP Cup will be based on the ranking of each country's highest-ranked player, the ATP said.
