Andrew Gillum congratulates DeSantis on becoming next governor

The campaign of Republican Ron DeSantis says it has no immediate response to Democrat Andrew Gillum's concession in the Florida governor's race but referred back to a statement Thursday in which DeSantis declared the contest "over". "This has been the journey of our lives". "This fight for Florida continues".

Gillum had initially conceded to DeSantis on election night, but he retracted it as the razor-thin margin between the two candidates narrowed.

The Tallahassee Mayor conceded the race on Saturday as a recount of ballots neared its end, and the Democrat congratulated Republican former Congressman DeSantis on becoming the state's next governor.

DeSantis said on Twitter, 'This was a hard-fought campaign.

Gillum participated in a handful of rallies, many anchored in churches, to support the recount effort, as flurries of lawsuits filed largely regarding the U.S. Senate race battled over deadlines for the recounts and some counties - including Palm Beach and Broward - struggled to meet deadlines to submit recounted ballot numbers in time.

Florida's high-profile race for governor was close as well, but not enough to trigger a hand recount. Republican Rick Scott leads in that race. More than 8 million voters cast ballots in the race. By law, any election result within 0.25 per cent would automatically trigger a manual recount.

DeSantis ran a largely negative campaign, calling Gillum a socialist and saying he oversaw one of the most corrupt and crime-ridden cities in the state.

At least 44 out of 67 counties have finished their hand recount in the Senate race. Once that recount was complete, if the differences in any of the races are 0.25 percentage points or less, a hand recount is ordered. I believe those ballots were probably mixed in with another stack, ' Snipes told the elections Canvassing Board at midday. The totals for Nelson and Scott have changed slightly, but not significantly.
