John Lewis Christmas ad: Can Elton scoop the Christmas Number 1?

Elton - who has sons Zachary, seven, and five-year-old Elijah with his husband David Furnish - said: "The John Lewis Christmas campaign has so many warm memories for me and my family".

And this year it's gone in a completely new direction, by featuring a music icon.

According to The Guardian, John Lewis's ad company sifted through more than 300 scripts before settling on Elton John's story as the one to continue the store's long tradition of heart - and purse - string pulling Christmas adverts.

But of course, not everyone is happy about it.

John Lewis' Christmas advert 2018 has finally arrived! The space includes dressing room, recording studio and living room sets from the ad, as well as props, recordings from Elton John's 17-11-70 album and the opportunity to have photos taken at the piano.

The big budget movie will star Taron Egerton as John, and will cover John's prolific rise to fame.

The ad, called The Boy and the Piano, starts with a dressing-gown clad Sir Elton gently tapping out the opening bars to Your Song - his first major hit, released in 1970.

"That's the magical feeling we wanted to bring to life this year".

They've produced some truly heartwarming adverts over the years, check out some of the best John Lewis Christmas adverts. However, the retailer says that figure is "wildly inaccurate" and that spend on the ad is broadly similar to previous years.

"When first approached to be part of it though, Elton requested that a portion of his fee was to be donated to the Elton John Charitable Trust".

It's also the first time since the 1950s that pianos have been out on the shop floor at John Lewis, which is another moving touch - Christmas is all about nostalgia, after all.
