The White House on Wednesday revoked the press pass issued to CNN correspondent Acosta "until further notice" after a tense interaction between United States President Donald Trump and Acosta.

Looking back at Acosta, who again rose up in his own defence, Trump added: "When you report fake news, which CNN does a lot, you are the enemy of the people".

Mr Acosta, CNN's chief White House correspondent, said he was informed by Secret Service officers that he could not enter for his scheduled 8pm broadcast.

Sanders tweeted a video, which later was revealed to have been doctored to appear worse, showing Acosta apparently swatting away the female intern when she tried to take his microphone away.

But the White House maintains that Mr Acosta was in the wrong, with Ms Sanders tweeting that his actions were "absolutely unacceptable".

In response to a question about how long Acosta's press credentials will be suspended, Trump declared, "As far as I'm concerned, I haven't made that decision".

The CNN reporter began his question to the president by saying he wanted to "challenge" him on his decision to call the latest Central American migrant caravan traveling to the USA up through Mexico an "invasion".

Acosta asked Trump if he thought he had "demonized" migrants by calling the group an "invasion". You know, he gets paid to burst in, he's a very unprofessional guy.

Trump also called out April Ryan, a White House correspondent for American Urban Radio Networks and a CNN analyst. "But she's very nasty, and she shouldn't be" he said.

In between his calls for "respect", Trump called Acosta "unprofessional" and disparaged the reporter's intelligence. "She's the White House press secretary". "I am proud to work for CNN, I have been working in this business for 21 years".

Despite the video's dubious origins, Sanders doubled down in a White House statement on Thursday saying "The question is: did the reporter make contact or not?" "We will not tolerate the inappropriate behaviour clearly documented in this video", she said. Trump said of the incident Friday that Acosta "was not nice to that young woman".

"Jim Acosta has our full support", the CNN communications department said in a statement posted to Twitter on Wednesday.
