Gail Brill, Phyllis Magnus and Beckie O'Neill protest Donald Trump's firing of U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, and the appointment of Matt Whitaker as acting AG in Riverside Park on Thursday night.

Protests were scheduled at 5 p.m.

Whitaker, chief of staff to Sessions, was named acting attorney general after Sessions tendered his resignation at the president's request.

"I'm very anxious", said Nicole Lockett, waving an American flag. The woman likely set to be the next House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, being was one of them, tweeting; "Given his record of threats to undermine & weaken the Russian Federation investigation, Matthew Whitaker should recuse himself". Among them was U.S. Sen. "He worked for Attorney General Sessions".

Trump repeatedly emphasized that he did not know Whitaker, whom he had tapped on Wednesday to lead the Justice Department on a temporary basis after forcing Attorney General Jeff Sessions out of the job. In a talk radio interview, he maintained there was no evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation.

"Matt Whitaker is a very smart man, he is a very respected man in the law enforcement community, top of the line", Trump said.

Any final report from the probe, which has been a work in progress, will be handed to Whitaker and it will be his decision whether to make it public, Reid reports. "It's an obstruction of justice to appoint someone who has been very vocal about his disdain for the Mueller investigation and we think that we can't stand by and let this stand".

Several GOP officials in Iowa who have known Whitaker for a long time say they were surprised by his shift in the Trump era.

The New York senator said he found the timing of Sessions's departure "very suspect". He called Trump's recent actions "a rerun of the 'Saturday Night Massacre, ' " a reference to the October 20, 1973 resignations of the attorney general and deputy attorney general after each refused an order by President Richard Nixon to fire Watergate special prosecutor Archibald Cox.

"We thank Attorney General Jeff Sessions for his service, and wish him well!"

Clovis, the 2016 Trump campaign national co-chairman, said in a May radio interview that he has been interviewed by the special counsel's team and had testified before the Mueller grand jury.

Since his appointment, past comments Whitaker made about Mueller's investigation have been played regularly on some cable news stations. However, Trump derided his argument, calling him "Mr Kellyanne Conway" and insisted that Conway, who has been a critic of Trump, was only interested in publicity.
