The England forward landed awkwardly as he challenged Bruno Gaspar for a header early in the first half, with his team-mates showing immediate concern for his plight.

Welbeck was taken to hospital during the second half of the game for an x-ray. The news is that we are going to wait, but we think it's a serious injury.

The Arsenal forward's career has been plagued by injuries, and this could be the worst of the lot.

"A further update will be issued over the next 72 hours", said the club. It would have been frustrating as an Arsenal fan, however, I'm sure they'll realise just how good the opposition was.

"His injury was hard also for the mentality of the players because they looked at the big injury".

But a 15th game unbeaten for Unai Emery's side at least assured them of European football after the turn of the year with two group matches left to seal top spot. "He's in hospital now and we'll see what happens", defender Rob Holding said.

"Danny is a tough lad, so if he's on the floor, I know it's something serious. He can come back strong".

Man United to take momentum into Manchester derby
Well they would not just be my favourites for the Premier League , they are favourites for the Champions League too. Mourinho also claimed United have "one final to play" if they want to get through.

The incident knocked the wind out of Arsenal's sails but Welbeck's replacement Aubameyang hit the crossbar as the visitors offered very little in terms of an attacking threat.

Danny Welbeck faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after breaking his ankle against Sporting Lisbon, while Stephan Lichtsteiner is out after picking up a muscular problem in the same match.

The England worldwide was on the fringes of Emery's first-team squad so a contract extension is unlikely to be forthcoming.

"The best for him is now to think for the person", Emery said. He broke something in his ankle and it's a different injury than another.

"It would just take all the uncertainly away and that would help his rehab on the mental side of it". The biggest topic of discussion was Danny Welbeck, who looked to really injure himself following an attempt at goal.

As the Lithuanian referee Ged Mazelka blew for half-time following a period of shapeless, scrappy play the only thing one could really say about the opening 45 minutes was to wish the popular "Welbz" well. "Will need [to be] imaged #AFC".
