Harper to draw ‘historical’ offers — Major League Baseball free agency

Nightengale says that Harper is seeking a 13-year deal that tops the average annual value of $34.42 million that Zack Greinke now has in his deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

It remains to be seen if the Yankees want to have a decade more of Stanton's style of play. It is believed though that he could waive it if he was offered a move closer to his home of Panorama City, CA. It's not like they didn't know he could be streaky, but there's no way they expected him to be so badly overmatched by elite righthanded pitching, most notably those horrendous at-bats against Craig Kimbrel in the ALDS. But no position player has ever earned an average annual value of more than $US27.5 million (Alex Rodriguez and Yoenis Cespedes). The deal would have been the second-richest in Major League Baseball history, trailing only Giancarlo Stanton's $325 million contract with the Miami Marlins signed in 2014, and the third-richest in sports history. It will cost them roughly $US13 million.

There's always a chance the owner could have a change of heart, of course, as he did after the 2013 season when he relented on his stated goal at the time to get under the luxury-tax threshold.

Tim Dierkes of MLB Trade Rumors predicted last week that Harper would sign a 14-year/$420 million contract. He'd make any team in baseball better, including the Red Sox.

However, it is becoming more and more clear that the Yankees intend to pass on Harper.

This is the player they're going to get.

Wherever Harper ends up, we know there's one place he won't land: NY.

It was reported Wednesday that Bryce Harper turned down a 10-year, $300 million contract offer from the Washington Nationals, the team's seemingly final attempt to keep him from exploring the free agent market.

Trading him to the Dodgers would be the easy out, but that's not happening, and the rest is up to Hal.
