Square Enix held a special Final Fantasy XV livestream today to commemorate the game's upcoming second anniversary.

Its decision to cancel Episodes Aranea, Lunafreya, and Noctis, Square Enix explained, is due to a shift in the studio's direction following the creation of a new studio (which was originally founded by Tabata) named Luminous Productions. It's not clear what came first in this case, the chicken or the egg, but whatever he left first, or the DLC was cancelled causing him to quit, Final Fantasy XV's development is no longer ongoing in the fashion it was before. The development team Luminous has decided that it will now be focusing its efforts on developing an entirely new AAA title. Only hours prior to the announcement Square Enix Holdings reported an "extraordinary loss" in finances through Luminous Productions - amounting to 3,733 million yen.

While Final Fantasy XV is Tabata's biggest project to date, he's been at Square Enix for over a decade, also serving as the director on Final Fantasy Type-0 and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII.

"In regards to my next endeavors and near future, I have a project that I truly wish to solidify as my next challenge after Final Fantasy XV". Ardyn's DLC will still be arriving in March 2019, and it sounds like that could be last DLC we see for Final Fantasy 15.

On December 13, the season pass for the console version of Final Fantasy XV is getting a price drop, it'll cost $14.99 Dollars. That is with the exception of Episode Ardyn, which will still release next year as a final send-off for the game.

At this point, it's unknown if these financial problems contributed to Tabata leaving Square Enix, but the timing is certainly coincidental. Comrades will include 10 new bosses, costumes, and weapons. There are plans to release a new anime short, and a collaboration with MMO Final Fantasy XIV will arrive on December 12th. After the standalone version launches, gamers won't be able to play the original Comrades expansion, but are invited to download the new game for free.
