United Nations condemns Saudi Arabia on Khashoggi death, human rights, Yemen

They include 15 members of an alleged Saudi "hit squad" that Turkey says was sent to Istanbul to kill the Washington Post columnist who had written critically of Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

"But most concerning is the murder of Jamal Khashoggi", he said, urging Saudi Arabia to "ensure comprehensive and transparent investigations into the murder" and to make sure "those responsible are held to account, and that measures are put in place to prevent any possibility of recurrence".

"Without due orders and permissions, 15 people can not come from Saudi Arabia to kill their own citizen", Mevlut Cavusoglu said during a visit to Japan.

That allegation was backed up Monday by a senior Turkish official, reports the New York Times, which named the men as Ahmad Abdulaziz al-Jonabi, a chemist, and Khaled Yahya al-Zahrani, a toxicologist.

It comes after Turkish media claimed yesterday that Saudi consulate staff tried to dismantle CCTV equipment at their Istanbul compound to help cover up Khashoggi's murder.

A Turkish source told Al-Jazeera on Tuesday that the Saudis would be paying a diya - a financial sum paid under Islamic law in compensation for murder or bodily harm - to Khashoggi's sons and his fiancee, Hatice Cengiz.

Saudi authorities denied ordering his death, but admitted that the journalist, who fled the country a year ago, died in an altercation with several men inside the consulate building, in what Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir described as a "rogue operation".

The official, who was not authorised to comment on the record and spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the dispatch of the two men to Turkey "suggests that Khashoggi's slaying was within the knowledge of top Saudi officials".

The kingdom's public prosecutor Saud al-Mojeb was later forced to admit he was killed in a premeditated attack.

Turkey's chief prosecutor said recently that Khashoggi was strangled as soon as he entered the consulate and also confirmed the body was dismembered. "Or he had a peaceful death", Abdullah Khashoggi told the United States network during the interview in Washington.

They were part of the team that arrived on Oct. 11, and they were at the consulate daily from Oct. 12 to Oct. 17.
