Democrats' hopes high for taking House, but nothing certain

Republicans were keenly aware that losing their majority will hamstring his political agenda over the next two years.

All 435 seats in the US House of Representatives, 35 US Senate seats and 36 governorships are up for grabs in elections focused on dozens of competitive races from coast to coast that opinion polls show could go either way. But several critical state governor positions may go to the Democrats.

Democrats need a net gain of 23 seats to take control of the House for the first time since the Tea Party wave of 2010 and the latest polls give them a good chance to do so.

The president has vowed to continue pushing for significant funding for a border wall, which Republicans may feel more comfortable with backing if voters hand them power again.

That is reflected in the early vote totals for these midterms, which are high.

A suburban Chicago polling station reported twice the number of voters compared to 2016 - a presidential election year - while in downtown Chicago, people gathered before polls opened.

"Divisiveness in the country is really tearing the country apart", said the Greek immigrant, a company CEO.

"The Dems are insane", he said. Like other Democrats across the country, Spanberger emphasized protecting people with pre-existing conditions from being denied coverage or charged more by insurers.

AFP reporters saw a steady flow of early voters at the Brooklyn Museum polling station in NY, and many voters at a station in Arlington, Virginia.

Wrapping up the campaign in recent days, Trump repeatedly raised fears about immigrants, issuing harsh warnings about a caravan of Central American migrants that is moving slowly through Mexico towards the U.S. border.

In addition to his kind words for Republicans on Ohio's ballot, Trump nailed his well-worn stump speech, highlighting the booming economy, bemoaning the migrant caravan and boasting of his successes in confirming two Supreme Court nominees. Days later, an avid Trump supporter was arrested for mailing pipe bombs to prominent critics of the president, all of whom Trump routinely derides as "evil" and "un-American". Democrats could also make significant progress in the investigations of Trump's possible collusion with Russian Federation and of his tax returns.

Democrats were most optimistic about the House, a sprawling battlefield set largely in America's suburbs where more educated and affluent voters in both parties have soured on Trump's turbulent presidency, despite the strength of the national economy. A conspiracy theory has also been put out that Jewish billionaire George Soros, a philanthropist and Democrat supporter, has facilitated the caravan to arrive in the United States and this theory has not only Trump's stamp of approval, but also widespread acceptance.

Trump, without control of Congress, could decide to triangulate. 'We'll just have to work a little bit differently, ' he said.

But Trump earlier in the day appeared to distance himself from the fate of House Republican candidates. Democrats are relying more upon women, people of color, young people and college graduates.

Stirring fear of foreigners and trumpeting American nationalism worked for the real estate billionaire in his 2016 election victory against the Democrats' establishment candidate Hillary Clinton. He never did, and also declined to release his tax returns as president.

I have no doubt that putting Trump and goodness knows how many of his associates, cronies, hangers-on, and toadies through years of pointless hearings will be satisfying for some earnest partisans.

"He is a sexist, a racist, a homophobe, a xenophobe and a religious bigot".

Trump's ultra-loyal white base laps up his colorful style, often cheering and chanting as he makes jaw-dropping insults against opponents and factually erroneous claims. Billionaire Michael Bloomberg, who advocates gun control, poured millions into House races for Democrats, offsetting the big-dollar spending to save Republicans by the Congressional Leadership Fund, which is aligned with House Speaker Paul Ryan.
