The man, believed to be in his 30s, is suffering "significant" leg and wrist injuries following the attack which happened about 5.35pm, Queensland Ambulance said in a tweet. He had dived into the water to give the woman her turn on the board when he was attacked, Mr O'Connell said.

There were more than a dozen yachts around at the time and French-speaking tourists rushed to the man's rescue on a dingy.

Christidis was taken by helicopter to the Mackay Base Hospital, 100 kilometres (60 miles) to the south, where he died.

"Every solid effort was made to save that man's life", O'Connell said.

Police said Tuesday that they have not publicly identified the man as they were still working to contact his next of kin.

One of the rescuers, Ben McCauely, who also was involved in the previous two incidents, said it felt like "deja vu" but worse.

"It was one of the more hard ones for everyone involved".

Christidis' employer, Austin Health, said the doctor was a research fellow. When the man jumped off the board, he was attacked by a shark.

"Our thoughts are with his family during this extremely hard time".

It was the third serious shark attack in Cid Harbour in two months after Tasmanian woman Justine Barwick and Melbourne girl Hannah Papps were bitten in separate attacks in September.

Despite the efforts of medical teams a Queensland Police spokeswoman confirmed the man died in hospital.

Barwick said in a statement that she was "devastated for the family and friends of this young man ... this is a awful tragedy".

Numerous charter boat operators were sensitive enough about the attacks to refuse the ABC's attempts yesterday to charter a boat out to Cid Harbour, amid concern about adverse media attention on the region.

Meanwhile, Fisheries Minister Mark Furner issued a stern warning.

They anchored 23 kilometers from Airlie Beach in Cid Harbor, intending to spend their first night in the protected mooring location on Whitsunday Island, the largest uninhabited island of the group, O'Connell reported.

Signs will be installed by this weekend telling people no one should swim in Cid Harbour under any circumstances.

Australia has not experienced a fatal shark attack since 17-year-old Laeticia Brouwer lost her leg while surfing with her father off Esperance in Western Australia on April 17 last year.
