The ad, which Trump posted to his Twitter page Wednesday and has since pinned to the top of his timeline, shows footage of undocumented immigrant Luis Bracamontes laughing as he says he killed police officers and promises to kill more.

In the video he sports a shaved head and long chin hair and speaks in accented English.

Democrats are generally favored to win the 23 seats they need to gain a majority in the U.S. House of Representatives, an advantage they could use to block Trump's agenda. "Who else would the Democrats allow in?" the ad asks, before promising that Trump and the Republicans are "making America safe again".

"Democrats let him stay", flashes on the screen.

There were some who supported Trump in sharing the ad, however.

Texas Rangers send hilarious tweet to Dodgers after World Series

Protests against Donald Trump as he visits Pittsburgh massacre synagogue
Another mourner, a retired teacher who only gave her first name Nancy, said: "I was finally able to cry". "It's just such a loss". The Trumps first went inside the vestibule of the synagogue , where they lit candles for each victim before stepping outside.

It's even being unfavorably compared to the Willie Horton ad of former President George H.W. Bush's campaign, in which Bush painted Democratic candidate Michael Dukakis as "soft on crime" by connecting him to a horrific story of a black criminal who raped a white woman and stabbed her white fiancee while on furlough from prison.

In a first reaction, Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez said the ad was a sign of desperation and suggested that Trump was losing the argument over health care that is at the center of the Democratic campaign.

The ad Trump is now promoting, though, goes even further in its racial and anti-immigrant fear-mongering, critics say.

The video stood in stark contrast to an ad circulated by the Trump campaign earlier in the week that highlighted rosy economic numbers and depicted gauzy scenes of American suburban life.

That video was timed to the one-year anniversary of Mr Trump's inauguration and meant to promote his immigration agenda.

Bracamontes' case - he was sentenced to death in March - also received steady coverage on Breitbart and other right-wing news sites.
