Frank Lampard couldn't claim another memorable Carabao Cup scalp as his valiant Derby County side lost 3-2 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Derby manager Lampard, who enjoyed 13 hugely successful years as a Chelsea player, watched his side put up a fearless fight against their Premier League opponents, twice levelling the match after calamitous own goals.

A hero's welcome awaited Frank Lampard as he strode back into the club where he ranks as a legendary figure, and the Derby County coach came close to causing Chelsea a Halloween nightmare.

Chelsea's centre-backs struggled against Derby.

The second-half may not have lived up to the thrilling first-period, but it was not without drama as Keogh had a great chance to level before substitute David Nugent hit the post with minutes to go, as Fabregas' strike proved enough to seal five-time winners Chelsea's place in the last eight of the competition.

Ross Barkley and Ruben Loftus-Cheek started the season on the sidelines but the former Everton man has three goals in four and the academy graduate has four in his last two. Maurizio Sarri's men were handed an early lead through Fikayo Tomori's unfortunate own goal before Jack Marriott restored parity for the visitors shortly thereafter.

FW Alvaro Morata, 6 - Was not helped by the rotation around him, but looked a shadow of the player who menaced Burnley and provided a focal point for Chelsea's fluid attack.

It certainly wasn't a performance that will have Sarri deviating from his usual Premier League line-up of Antonio Rudiger and David Luiz who have both performed well this season.

"I'm so thankful to the Chelsea fans", added Lampard, whose name was chanted by the home supporters throughout the match. "They know how I feel about them", Lampard, the club's all-time top scorer, told Sky Sports.

In the end, though, Chelsea managed to deliver the killer blow and it actually came from one of their own players with Cesc Fabregas bagging his first of the season. "I'm proud of my players".

Interestingly, now Derby manager Lampard scored four goals that day, but will be hoping for less of the same come Wednesday - though goals are a guarantee.

Derby threatened in the second half and nearly scored a third equaliser when David Nugent hit the post late on.

This could be the first game of many [for them] at Chelsea.

A stumbling Waghorn passed up a one-on-one chance to complete a quickfire turnaround and Derby punished themselves through more calamitous defending.

Since then, Chelsea legend Zola has insisted that the gesture was not a favour to Derby boss Lampard, and is far removed from his legendary status with the Premier League club.
