The comments, trailed early Tuesday ahead of the interview being broadcast later this week, came as the administration hardens its already extreme line on immigration ahead of the midterm elections next month.

The options are just two of many possibilities now under discussion, including asylum law changes and simply barring members of the migrant caravans from entering the country using the same mechanism as the president's much-publicized travel ban for people from certain Muslim countries.

"The President does not have the power to erase parts of the Constitution, but he and the GOP Congress have spent two years trying to erase protections for people with pre-existing conditions", Ms. Pelosi said.
