Flu Shots are Safe, Free, and Important

Florida health officials say a child is the first death in this flu season.

The child, who tested positive for influenza B, died sometime during the week of September 30, although privacy concerns prevent officials from saying exactly where, CBS affiliate WTSP reports.

Dr. Richard Webby, a WHO Vaccine Composition Team Member and member of the Infectious Diseases Department at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, says this year's vaccine is an improvement from last year's.

For the first time in five years, the Grundy County Health Department will hold a drive-through, flu shot clinic Wednesday, October 17 from 10 to 1 o'clock.

According to the CDC, approximately 80 percent of these pediatric deaths were unvaccinated.

Getting a flu shot can reduce a pregnant woman's risk of being hospitalized from the flu by an average of 40 percent, according to a study coauthored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of the United States and published on October 11.

The vaccine is widely available at doctor's offices and pharmacies and it take a couple of weeks to build immunity to the flu and the flu season has started.

More importantly, Dr Walters warns that babies under six months are among the most vulnerable, but they can't get vaccinated because they are too young.
