Three wounded in Cologne hostage-taking

Authorities said the perpetrator has sustained life-threatening injuries.

The woman was released and is reported to have minor injuries, while the man was taken to hospital in a serious condition.

Eyewitnesses said the teenager had been in a cafe close to the pharmacy immediately before the hostage-taking. Breslauer Platz square that's located behind the station was also closed.

Following a hours-long standoff, German police have finally apprehended an assailant who took hostage a woman near Cologne central station.

"We're doing everything to get the hostage out of there unharmed", Gilles said.

There was a full evacuation of the station, one of Germany's biggest transport hubs.

German railroad operator Deutsche Bahn tweeted earlier that some of the station's tracks were shut down temporarily and trains were being canceled or delayed.

DW's Dana Regev was at the scene and watched as negotiation crisis units.

Police said they could not yet positively identify the hostage taker, who was undergoing surgery, but believed he was a 55-year-old Syrian migrant.

It wasn't immediately clear how the man was injured and police said on Twitter that emergency personnel were trying to revive him with CPR. Police would not speculate on whether the hostage situation was terror-related.
