United Kingdom companies can't afford to ignore mental health issues

Health Minister Jackie Doyle-Price will lead the national effort and try to end the stigma which stops people from seeking help, Theresa May announced as she marked World Mental Health Day.

The survey identified that LGBTQ+ people are more likely to have mental health issues and shows an urgent need for businesses to step up their support for not only those suffering from mental health, but also for the LGBTQ+ people in their workforce.

More importantly, no statistic can ever begin to capture the devastating and isolating impact on those people affected by mental health issues, and on their families and friends.

More than a quarter (26%) of people aged 16-24 years and a similar proportion (25%) of people aged 25-34 years had a 12-month mental disorder, compared with 6% of those aged 75-85 years old.

Mental health disorders are expected to drain 16 trillion U.S. dollars (£12 trillion) per year from the global economy by 2030, experts have said.

WFMH wants to encourage a plan of early interventions, prevention of mental illness and triggers such as bullying, and the implementing of resilience support and programs to educate young people about mental wellbeing.

But perhaps the most significant development is the addition of a mental health screening programme to the induction process which all athletes and staff go through when they join a sport's elite set-up.
