‘Mental health should be as important as physical health’

The authors detail the grim reality of suicide and make a case for completely rethinking our overall approach to mental health as a society.

The new Mental Health Strategy launched on Wednesday - World Mental Health Day.

Globally, "depression is one of the leading causes of illness and disability among adolescents" with suicide being the third leading cause of death in 15 to 19-year-olds, noted the WHO.

Health Minister Jackie Doyle-Price will lead the national effort and try to end the stigma which stops people from seeking help, the Prime Minister said.

"For over a decade, we have had doctors who are consultants in sport and exercise medicine looking after our elite athletes", he added.

Mental illness most of the times don't improve on their own and needs professional consultation. "And we can give the mental wellbeing of our children the priority it so profoundly deserves".

"As a government, we have delineated our health system for easy appreciation of the roles required by all stakeholders in the sector".

"And, under these circumstances, discuss whether the equivalent of a mental health levy would be a proportionate response, both in terms of changing behaviour on the part of the companies involved and in terms of providing a funding stream for the expanded services we all want to see".

"It's these people who need to be at the heart of what we do and I welcome this opportunity to work closely with them, as well as experts, to oversee a cross-Government suicide prevention plan, making their sure their views are always heard".
