- Authorities have named the suspect they believe shot seven police officers, killing one as they tried to serve a search warrant Wednesday at a home in an upscale Florence neighborhood.

The shooter has been identified as Fred Hopkins, according to a senior law enforcement official with direct knowledge of the investigation, CBS News' David Begnaud reports.

The decorated 74-year-old Vietnam War veteran accused of shooting seven SC law enforcement officers had set an ambush for investigators coming to question his adult son about a child sexual assault, the sheriff investigating the case said Friday.

"You're at bond hearing court", the judge replied. ABC 7 identified the deceased officer as 52-year-old Terrence Carraway, a 30-year veteran of the Florence Police Department.

Three Florence officers and three deputies were wounded in the standoff, Heidler said. Afterward, the police department and the sheriff's office were able to remove Hopkins from the home after he'd spoken with a negotiator and agreed to be taken into custody.

"Please put the families of these officers in your prayers", Boone said. "The officers couldn't get to the ones who were down". Two of the Florence County deputies and one of the Florence police officers remain in critical condition. He was fatally shot as he ran through a barrage of gunfire to get to the wounded officers.

"He was my friend, my brother", Heidler said.

Carraway had started a mentoring program for disadvantaged youths called Camp FEVER, said Heidler, the police chief.

Florence County Chief Deputy Glenn Kirby said police were trying to investigate an accusation that a 27-year-old had sexually assaulted a foster child in the house when the suspect opened fire at about 16:30 local (20:30 GMT). In 2014, Hopkins was charged with public disorderly conduct, according to court records.

Democrats claimed throughout the week that the FBI's additional background check was not sufficient due to its limited scope. The FBI did not interview Christine Blasey Ford, who accused Kavanaugh of sexual assault during a 1980s high school party.

During the ordeal, Hopkins also allegedly barricaded himself inside the home with children, but they were unharmed. A source tells FOX 46 the name of the officer killed was Terrence Carraway. Three Florence County sheriff's deputies were also shot after responding to the scene for back-up, though its unclear what their conditions are as of Thursday evening.

The Associated Press is reporting Hopkins is a lawyer who was disbarred.

The shooting took place off Hoffmeyer Road in the Vintage Place subdivision.

After the laughter dies down the mayor cites Carraway's service as a patrol officer, a special desk agent, school resource officer, criminal investigator and "sometime dance instructor".

The Charleston County Sheriff's office said it would be sending deputies to Florence to support the community and law enforcement operations.

President Donald Trump reacted to the tragedy on Twitter.

"This is simply devastating news from Florence", McMaster wrote.

A judge made a decision to wait for more information before granting the elder Hopkins, a disabled Vietnam veteran, a court-appointed attorney.

'The selfless acts of bravery from the men and women in law enforcement is real, just like the power of prayer is real'.
