Ma's bold promise following his January 2017 meeting at Trump Tower was greeted with scepticism by analysts at the time, who said the move was more about good PR than substance.

The planned creation of the chip subsidiary is believed to be part of Alibaba co-founder Jack Ma's efforts to help reduce China's dependence on US technologies.

Trump on Monday imposed 10 percent tariffs on about $200 billion worth of imports from China, and threatened duties on about $267 billion more if China retaliated.

"On China-U.S. frictions, people should make preparations for the next 20 years", Ma said. This article is strictly for informational purposes only.

The ninth edition of the tech conference is being held from September 19-22 here in Hangzhou, the provincial capital of Zhejiang, where Alibaba is headquartered. Trump also threatened yesterday to slap levies on an additional $267 billion of goods - almost half of all of China's imports into the U.S.

Ma, who recently announced his impending retirement from Alibaba, has been vocal in his condemnation of the escalating trade conflict between the USA and China.

Ma said this week Alibaba wouldn't stop working to contribute to the healthy development of trade between the two nations, and that trade between the two countries and in the world still needs improvement.

Besides Jack, Alibaba's top executives, including cloud head Simon Hu, technology steering committee chairman Wang Jian and chief technology officer Jeff Zhng would deliver keynotes on breakthroughs and the company's roadmap to develop emerging technologies.

He did not directly reply to questions asking if there will be a fresh round of trade talks between Beijing and Washington, which had appeared to be in the works prior to the latest tit-for-tat tariffs.

Ma made the comments in what he said was his last speech to shareholders as chairman of the Chinese internet giant.

"I'm just 54, and I still have at least 16 years to do something new", Ma told Xinhua.
