However, when it comes to smart speakers, Amazon has managed to put an Echo device, powered by Alexa, in more homes than Apple, Samsung and Google combined.

Amazon is reportedly working on eight new Alexa-enabled devices - including a microwave - that it hopes to launch by the end of this year, reports CNBC. They include a microwave, an amplifier, a receiver, a subwoofer and an in-car device - all of which will either have Alexa built in or will be Alexa-enabled. Unfortunately, they did not reveal what will be unveiled later this month, when Amazon is expected to unveil some of these devices.

Meanwhile, additional details on these forthcoming smart appliances are extremely slim: CNBC cities only "an internal document" and "people familiar with the matter" before later stating that Amazon declined to comment. The company also partnered with Garmin recently to make the Garmin Speak Plus, a dash cam that connects to Alexa for in-car voice commands. And costing just $50 for its latest revision, it's an unrivaled entry point for Amazon's digital future. CNBC suggests that the smart speaker market could be worth around $30 billion by 2024, and Amazon wants to be there. Sonos has subwoofers and amplifiers that work with Alexa, while GE's microwaves support the assistant.

It's unclear whether the devices will be branded as part of the Echo line, which includes devices like the original Echo, Echo Dot and Echo Show. Audi, one of the popular automobile firms has recently took the wraps off its first ever electric vehicle that supports Amazon Alexa voice commands.

Earlier this year, Amazon acquired the smart doorbell maker Ring, which also makes devices that are compatible with Alexa.

Amazon Echo relies on Microsoft's Bing search engine and Wikipedia, while Google Home uses the company's own Google Search. Sonos has a similar business model. These being said, what Alexa-driven device would you like to get for this holiday season?
