First Look at Joaquin Phoenix as The Joker

Joaquin Phoenix is Arthur Fleck in the first official image of the actor from the set of Joker.

Aside from the 1989 Batman movie, which presented an origin story for the character as a mob gangster named Jack Napier, the Joker typically hasn't been shown as having a traditional backstory. Instead of the smirk that Phoenix had on his face in the initial image, this piece shows his character frowning, but there is a red smile painted over top of the photo.

It feels unique, and I think more then anything, and probably the most important thing, is Todd seems very passionate about it and very giving, and so that's exciting. I really can see definite shades of the Joker in him here, even though this is clearly before the makeup and costume. Phillips co-wrote the film with Scott Silver (The Fighter, 8 Mile).
