Coca-Cola Reportedly Interested In The Cannabis Drink Industry

"Along with many others in the beverage industry, we are closely watching the growth of non-psychoactive CBD as an ingredient in functional wellness beverages around the world", said a Coke statement, per MarketWatch. The soft drink company is reportedly monitoring the cannabis industry - and is specifically interested in drinks infused with CBD, the non-psychoactive ingredient in marijuana that treats pain without a resulting high. "The space is evolving quickly".

Aurora spokeswoman Heather MacGregor also declined to comment about any talks with Coca-Cola, but did confirm that her company does intend to enter the infused beverage market.

That makes such drinks a great opportunity for beverage makers to diversify their product lines and many have already begun to do so.

Coca-Cola is considering a move into the growing market for cannabis-infused drinks.

Some companies have teamed up with cannabis producers to make drinks that will give drinkers a "buzz" but Coca-Cola and Aurora would allegedly be developing something to ease inflammation, pain and cramping.

Coke would join a rush by major alcohol makers and a cigarette company to test the cannabis market and find partners ahead of the October 17 launch of legal recreational marijuana in Canada.

In June, the US Food and Drug Administration approved the epilepsy treatment Epidiolex, the first cannabis-based drug allowed in the United States. Heineken NV's Lagunitas craft-brewing label has launched a brand specializing in non-alcoholic drinks infused with THC, marijuana's active ingredient. It is the non-psychoactive chemical component of marijuana used for medicinal objective which doesn't produce the high that usually comes from tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

A source told BNN Bloomberg Television that the two companies are "pretty advanced down the path" of forging a deal.
