As midterm polls approach, Trump insists booming United States economy is not Obama's

Despite Trump's incorrect tweet, both figures are good for Trump, with the GDP growth rate the highest in nearly four years and the unemployment rate the lowest it has been in nearly 18 years. And the political geography could be interesting here because those, what the Labor Department refers to as goods-producing jobs, tend to be concentrated in more rural and suburban and more Republican parts of the country, the kind of areas where Donald Trump did well in 2016.

GDP growth exceeded the jobless rate as recently as the first quarter of 2006, when unemployment was about 4.7% and quarterly GDP growth was 5.4%, government data show.

GDP is a reading of the output of the overall economy.

That's probably because the growth rate Trump repeatedly cites, the 4.2 percent expansion at an annual rate that occurred in the April-June quarter, isn't out of line with Obama's record. "When President Obama left, after eight years in office, he had only created 195 000 jobs for African-Americans". He inherited a dismal economy in the middle of a recession that lasted 18 months, facing what many feared would be a depression, and was able to turn it around in the first years of his presidency.

After relaying an incident in which he had inadvertently given an incorrect figure to Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the White House press secretary, Hassett repeated that the president had made a mistake.

Yet it barely missed that cutoff in 2015, when it expanded 2.9 percent under Obama. HASSETT: "Small-business optimism is near the highest level in 35 years".

Jobs for college graduates were virtually nonexistent during the Obama era: You may recall during Obama's administration college graduates had an nearly impossible time finding a job.

Still, optimism doesn't automatically translate into more spending or jobs.

But Trump got it wrong way wrong when he said it hasn't happened in a century.

Sanders asserted at the August 14 White House press briefing that Trump had tripled Obama's eight-year job creation record in just 18 months, quoting numbers that are not even close to accurate.

In less than two years of the Trump administration, the nation has effectively gained full employment (3.9 percent unemployment rate) with minority unemployment reaching record lows. And some of that additional investment may have been spurred by the Trump administration's corporate tax cut.
