Madonna is drawing criticism for her VMAs tribute to Aretha Franklin, and for good reason.

Madonna is facing backlash online after her tribute to Aretha Franklin at the VMAs on Monday night was criticized for being more about herself than Franklin, whose death last week stunned the world.

Others accused Madonna, who was wearing a black caftan and her hair in braids, of cultural appropriation.

The 72-year-old pop star/actress is still going strong and during a gig in Atlantic City she admitted that she was once made to feel insecure about her age, because of her Witches of Eastwick director George Miller and co-star Jack Nicholson.

"The "Like A Virgin" singer opened the segment by saying Franklin had "changed the course" of her life, and shared that when she was an aspiring singer and dancer she sang Franklin's "(You Make Me Feel A) Natural Woman" acapella during an unsuccessful audition. Taking to the stage as an image of Franklin was projected on the screen behind her, Madonna told a lengthy, at times rambling, story, mostly about her own journey. "I thought Madonna was supposed to be paying homage to Aretha but all I heard was her paying homage to herself". I had to think fast.

"Madonna spoke about herself during that entire Aretha Franklin speech", one remarked.

After telling the meandering story, Madonna pleaded: "There is a connection!"

The Grammy victor reiterated that "none of this would've happened, could've happened without our lady of soul".

With Madonna, everything's always about Madonna, 24/7/365. You and @MTV should be ashamed.

But Madonna was called upon to do the tribute for Michael Jackson. and Prince. and now Aretha.

After joking she retorted "B****, I'm Madonna" - she recalled how she left Paris and came back a few month later realising she had not "earned the luxury life I was living".

There was a hometown takeover from Jennifer Lopez, who sizzled in a sequined body suit with a medley of some of her biggest hits, including "Ain't Your Mama", "Love Don't Cost a Thing" and "Get Right".

As you might expect, the internet was just simply not having this.

And MTV shoulda known better.
