Overall, however, it was the overall dearth of apps in Microsoft's then-nascent app store that caused both Windows 8 and especially Windows Phone 8 to rot. Submissions for new Windows Phone 8 apps are also now accepted. Sadly, Windows 10 Mobile was a costly flop, and ultimately led to Microsoft's exit from the mobile market.

Microsoft is telling developers of apps for its older mobile and desktop operating systems to instead port their existing software to its Universal Windows Platform for targeting all Windows 10 devices, from Microsoft's HoloLens headset to PCs. The upgrade will not be made available automatically.

With no new apps or updates, another nail is hammered into Windows Phone's coffin.

It's no wonder that this permission for the arrival of updates to the mobile version of Windows 8 is terminated at this point since the operating system itself has been unsupported for more than a year. The deadline for Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 comes much later on July 1, 2023.

Windows Phone users will lose support for their native Microsoft Teams, Yammer, and Skype for Business apps as of next month.

Windows 8.1 dropped out of mainstream support earlier this year, entering the five-year extended support period in which it receives only security fixes.
