Nvidia's Latest GPUs Aim to Boost the Realism of Graphics

The new GPU architecture has been created to support Nvidia's RTX suite of hardware and software algorithms to help generate ray tracing on the fly, hence the switch from the GTX nomenclature to the RTX prefix.

According to one of Wccftech's sources, shipments of the RTX 2070 and 2060 will not begin until the end of October/early November, at the earliest. The change in the naming of the cards from GTX to RTX refers to the use of real time ray-tracing technology in the new GPUs, which was announced at Game Developer Conference 2018 in March. And it's the 2070 that's looking to come a little later. "The breakthrough is a hybrid rendering model that boosts today's computer graphics with the addition of lightning-fast ray-tracing acceleration and AI".

Meanwhile, Tensor cores bring artificial intelligence to a consumer graphics card. All the information we have, and the latest leaks and spills, point to an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 and RTX 2080 Ti being launched tonight.

But you may have noticed that Nvidia is using RTX rather than the GTX prefix.

Alienware is wasting no time with Nvidia's hot new RTX GPUs.

Metro Exodus, meanwhile, uses the new Nvidia GeForce RTX series cards to significant enhance its lighting.

The power gap between the two series can't be understated though.

You can pre-order "Founder Editions" of the all three graphics cards right now via the NVIDIA website. They will be sold by partners including ASUS, Colorful, EVGA, Gainward, Galaxy, Gigabyte, Innovision 3D, MSI, Palit, PNY, and Zotac. If you want to reserve a copy, you can now pre-order it on Amazon. Special editions with higher speeds and better cooling features will cost $100 to $200 extra. Some pricing was included in the PNY data sheets, which suggested the new PNY GeForce RTX 2080 XLR8 would be $800, and the PNY GeForce RTX 2080 Ti XLR8 would be $1000. Both the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti and GeForce RTX 2080 are getting Gaming X Trio versions.

It's not yet known when third-party manufacturers will begin selling their cards, but it's expected they'll probably land around the same 20 September date.

On Monday, Huang showed off a series of demonstrations he said were running on the new RTX cards, but did not offer much in the way of industry standard benchmarks, or comparisons to older cards from his company or cards from competitors like Advanced Micro Devices. Clocked at 1,350MHz with 4352 CUDA cores and 11GB of GDDR6 RAM - this isn't a card to be sniffed at. It also packs 8GB of newfangled 14Gbps GDDR6 memory (more than the rumored 7GB), with 2304 CUDA cores.

Nvidia also recommends a 650W power supply for your rig as a single RTX 2080 draws 215W of power to run. You can find out more here.

NVIDIA just posted a blog post, and it is a rather unusual one.
