Citing unnamed sources, Nikkei Asian Review on Friday reported that Google's Echo Show competitor will make its debut in time for the holidays this year.

Whenever the smart display with Google Assistant comes out, we can expect several features on it which aren't offered with the Amazon Echo Show. According to figures from Canalys, market-leader Amazon sold just 315,000 Echo Show devices in 2015. The Google Home range of speakers uses the Google Assistant to answer queries, perform requests, play music, and so on. According to the research firm, Google had a spectacularly strong three month period with year-over-growth in shipments hitting 420%. The Android developer's AI speaker lineup now features the standard Google Home, the cost-effective Home Mini and the high-end Home Max.

"Many players, including Amazon, are integrating smart speakers into verticals, such as hotels, retail, hospitals and other business establishments", says Canalys senior analyst Jason Low.

While the United States remained the principal destination for smart speaker shipments, accounting for 68 percent of Amazon's global shipments and 58 percent of Google's, according to Canalys' figures. "It's an aggressive plan", one source stated. For a lot of users (myself included), this represented a major blow to the usability of the Amazon Echo, which is perfectly tailored for watching short videos as opposed to more involved, long-form content. In the same way that Google shook up the tablet market in 2012 with its early Nexus tablet ($199), it could do the same for smart displays with its own unit. Presumably, it would fit in at the upper end of Google's smart speaker line which already consists of the Google Home Mini, the standard Google Home and the Google Home Max. While Amazon works to create a more engaging user experience by offering personalized features, Google focuses on expanding Google Assistant's global reach, providing more language support and local features, Mariana Zamoszczyk, senior analyst in Ovum's Consumer Services, wrote in a post.

The smart speaker market grew from 3.9 million in Q2 2017 to 11.7 million in Q2 2018.
