'Queen of Soul' Aretha Franklin dies at 76

Redding sang: "Hey little girl, you're sweeter than honey / And I'm about to give you all of my money / But all I want you to do / Is just give it, give it / Respect when I come home ..." By her mid-20s, she was already a superstar. She won a whopping 18 Grammy Awards over the course of her career and sold more than 75 million records.

She performed at the inaugurations of Presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter, and at the funeral for civil rights pioneer Rosa Parks. In a 2009 interview with the newspaper, Franklin recalled King sleeping over at her dad's house whenever he made a pit stop in Detroit. 'We were witnessing the greatest soul artist of all time.

Obama tweeted: "Aretha helped define the American experience".

Tributes to the "Queen of Soul" have flowed in from entertainment figures. She deserves not only our RESPECT but also our lasting gratitude for opening our eyes, ears and hearts.

The Aretha Franklin Avenue subway station art isn't the first such tribute to the powerhouse singer.

"My idea was to make good tracks, use the best players, put Aretha back on piano and let the lady wail", he wrote.

He likened her to jazz musician Miles Davis, saying she was "always striving for new things". Legendary music. Music that you don't really hear today.

Franklin signed with Columbia Records in 1960, and released the album Aretha the following year. She toured as a child in a traveling gospel revival show featuring her father, the Reverend C-L Franklin. It was reported by TMZ on August 17 (Aug. 16 in the United States) that Grande broke down after singing a tribute to Franklin on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon".

"She helped us feel more connected to each other, more hopeful, more human".

Still, even as both songstresses publicly stressed that they did not have a feud, some pointed to evidence of a rivalry extending beyond the music industry.

Dozens of artists - many of whom peformed with Franklin over the years - took to Twitter to share their condolences and memories of the global icon. Franklin has also received NAACP Vanguard Award and was inducted into the Apollo Theater Legends Hall of Fame. WDET's Jay Butler says he ran into Franklin at a party and the Queen of Soul's health was not a topic for discussion.
