Elon Musk tackling Dodger Stadium traffic problem with the 'Dugout Loop'

Elon Musk's two-year-old tunnel digging venture has proposed yet another project in the Los Angeles area: a one-way, approximately 3.6-mile tunnel from a lot near an LA Metro Station to Dodger Stadium. That's about 2.5 percent of Dodger Stadium's capacity. Once finished, the tunnel will have electric skates traveling at 125-150 miles per hour, carrying 8-18 passengers each, for the cost of roughly $1 per ride (though the FAQ points out that the fares aren't finalized).

Although The Boring Company claims that this tunnel could alleviate traffic to Dodger Stadium during games and concerts, the tunnel will only be one-way, so the company will have to stage numerous eight- to 16-person electric skates that run through the tunnel before a game or it will have to pause outbound trips to bring more electric skates to the western terminal. On Wednesday, it announced plans to build what it's calling the Dugout Loop, "a zero-emissions, high-speed, underground public transportation system" that will whisk fans to the stadium from one of three Red Line Metro stations in less than four minutes.

Now the project must clear public hearings and the city council. The Boring Co. says that number could increase based on city and community feedback. The initial documents are available for public review through September 17, and a public meeting will be held at Dodger Stadium on August 28.

"The Boring Company has made technical progress much faster than expected and has chose to make its first tunnel in Los Angeles an operational one, hence Dugout Loop!" it said in its online project description.

The company said it's working with L.A's Bureau of Engineering to start an environmental impact report.

As any Los Angeles resident knows, getting to and from Dodger Stadium on a game day can be a disaster. The Boring Company expects the project will take fewer than 14 months to complete.
