A fuel tanker erupted into an enormous fireball after crashing Monday on a highway in northern Italy, leaving one dead and at least 55 others injured.

Italian media said a truck carrying cars collided on a bridge with another tanker truck containing explosive materials.

The explosion happened after an accident that involved a truck carrying liquefied petroleum gas, according to the Italian news agency ANSA.

The city's airport is around 3.7 miles north-west of the city centre in northern Italy's Emilia-Romagna region.

A police video showed the tanker failing to slow down quick enough and plowing into the rear of a truck stopped in traffic, with flames exploding on impact.

The tanker immediately caught fire, and then exploded a short time later across eight lanes, collapsing part of the raised highway.

At least two of the injured are police officers, the Italian highway patrol told CNN. The explosion occurred near Borgo Paginale to west of the city, very close to Bologna airport, about 2 pm (1200 GMT), the Italian fire service said on Twitter.
