President Donald Trump said on Wednesday his meeting with Vladimir Putin would lead to "big results", in a continuing bid to calm a storm over his failure to criticize the Russian leader for Moscow's actions to undermine the 2016 US election.

Lawmakers on Capitol Hill are forging ahead with plans to push back on the fallout from President Donald Trump's comments at a news conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin, as lawmakers once again Wednesday are feeling the whiplash of the President's inconsistent comments on Russia.

"It is a proposal that was made in sincerity by President Putin, but President Trump disagrees with it", White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement.

"The government is speculating that someone is a Russian spy, but thousands of Russians met intelligence operatives" in the United States, he said.

The cover was released just days after the two leaders' joint press conference in Helsinki, during which Mr. Trump appeared to cast doubt on the conclusion of US intelligence agencies that Russian Federation interfered with the 2016 election.

The invitation came as an apparent surprise to the Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats when he was told about it during a live interview at the Aspen Security Forum in Aspen, Colorado.

Putin said in a speech to Russian ambassadors gathered in Moscow that "it's naive to think that the problems would be solved in a few hours". The remarks put him at odds with U.S. intelligence over claims of Russian interference in 2016 election. The White House on Wednesday denied that President Trump said Russian Federation was no longer a threat to the United States. "Russia has agreed to help with North Korea, where relationships with us are very good and the process is moving along", he said.

Putin, speaking to Russian diplomats from around the world, said the Helsinki summit had been successful.

Much of the outrage stemmed from one comment Mr Trump made when he appeared alongside Mr Putin at the summit.

Trump's remarks during a joint press conference with Putin on Monday were widely condemned by both political parties.

In an interview with "CBS Evening News" anchor Jeff Glor Wednesday, President Trump was asked if he holds Putin personally responsible for meddling. "Putin and I discussed many important subjects at our earlier meeting".

The scale of the bipartisan outcry at Trump's stance toward Putin has only been rivaled by his 2017 waffling over condemning white supremacist demonstrators in Charlottesville, Virginia.

On Wednesday, the Russian Prosecutor General's office listed Americans it wanted to question for "illegal activities", including Michael McFaul, who was US ambassador to Russia under Democratic former President Barack Obama.

Sanders said Trump was still weighing the offer with his team, adding, "We've committed to nothing".
