Only Ontario and Quebec will keep their routes when the cancellations go into effect at the end of October, and the US division will still operate the Seattle-to-Vancouver route.

Meantime, a First Nations leader is calling on the government to do something to ensure people can get around.

But Transport Canada told National Observer in a statement that it was not the federal government's role to intervene with subsidies for Greyhound or other private intercity bus companies.

Yesterday (Monday), Greyhound Canada said it would cancel all B.C. routes except for one: the US -run route between Vancouver and Seattle; however, all routes in Ontario and Quebec will remain except for the Trans-Canada service west of Sudbury, Ont.

"What should have happened was STC and the government could have taken a look at how they could have better utilized the public service that they were providing, whatever that could have meant", she said.

British Columbia's Passenger Transportation Board has also announced it will "fast-track" applications for long distance bus services.

"That's shocking", she said of the news.

"People rely on this to get to points of employment ... on a week-to-week basis", Kemmere said, noting people also access health care through the bus routes."There's a general concern".

Greyhound said it was ending passenger service after years of adjusting schedules and prices because ridership had fallen by almost 41 per cent across the country since 2010.

The group Stop the Cuts (Save STC) said in a release this week that Greyhound's decision will affect people in small and rural communities.

The minister says there are private operators who are very nimble and quick, who may be interested in taking over some of the routes Greyhound is cutting.

Greyhound passengers put their luggage on a the bus before departing from Vancouver, on Monday July 9, 2018.

She did, however, she was shocked at the decision because it came with no warning.

Trevena states that Greyhound did not reach out to her or her staff prior to their choice to cut Western Canada from their services, adding that is was "something I would have expected, given their long history in this province".

Alternative methods of transportation exist, but few are as economical and convenient as Greyhound.

In a statement, the company called the decision "regrettable", blaming it on declining ridership in rural communities, increased competition from subsidized national and inter-regional passenger transportation services, the entry of low-priced carriers, regulatory constraints, and increased vehicle travel.

"As the northernmost major Canadian city and a hub for an bad lot of important things that happen in Western Canada, it's concerning", Edmonton Mayor Don Iveson told reporters just after hearing the news on Monday.
