Trump shares 'very nice note' from Kim Jong Un

Donald Trump has released a letter he received from North Korean leader Kim Jong-un while touting "great progress" in negotiations between the United States and Pyongyang - despite reports of a breakdown in talks. -North Korea relations, despite signs that path-finding diplomacy between the adversaries is running into problems.

Trump tweeted that the letter is "a very nice note" from Kim, adding that "great progress" is being made.

On July 6, when Pompeo was in North Korea, The Wall Street Journal reported that evidence gathered by South Korea's military found North Korea working on a submarine that could launch nuclear missiles.

"President Trump still believes that the agreement that was reached in Singapore where North Korea agreed to complete denuclearization represents a commitment that we can make progress on and we are going to continue to work through that", the vice president said.

Last month, Trump met the North Korean leader in a historic summit in Singapore.

The expected to try again Sunday to meet with the North Koreans at Panmunjom on the Demilitarized Zone to discuss the return of the remains of U.S. troops missing from the 1950-53 Korean War.

North Korean officials did not turn up to a Thursday meeting with the US military about repatriating the remains of the war dead, according to a USA official with knowledge of the situation.

Heather Nauert said in a statement that the North Koreans proposed the date Thursday after a meeting expected the same day failed to materialize.

In Thursday's report submitted to the U.N. committee responsible for monitoring North Korean sanctions, the United States said North Korean tankers filled up with oil using ship-to-ship transfers at least 89 times in the first five months of 2018.

He said he saw a big difference in North Korea's attitudes to talks.

"Denuclearization is something the North Koreans are not focusing on other than being part of a general denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, not unilateral denuclearization", he said, alluding to the North's longstanding demand that the US also remove its nuclear umbrella over South Korea.

Pompeo gave a rosier readout.

He shared the four-paragraph letter on Twitter, in which Mr Kim describes their 12 June summit - and the resulting joint statement - as the "start of a meaningful journey".

Trump and Kim's friendship comes just a year after the latter was threatened by the former with "fire and fury like the world has never seen" if he continued to develop nuclear bombs.

Washington requested in a letter that the United Nations sanctions committee declare that North Korea had violated the UN-approved quota and "order an immediate halt to all transfers of refined petroleum products" to North Korea.
