Serena Williams Dominates Wimbledon as All Top 10 Women’s Seeds Are Out

None of the top eight women's seeds have reached the quarter-finals for the first time since seedings were introduced in 1927 - although Williams' 25th seeding is misleading. "To be here. To be in the semifinals".

"I don't know what to say right now". Shouldn't really happen, but thankfully they do for me. I just kept fighting. "But I felt good". It will be both very tough matches. "To me, it's scary how close she is to being back to her best level".

Williams, a four-time Olympic gold medalist, is seeking her 24th Grand Slam title, which would tie Margaret Court for first on the all-time list.

That is going to change now.

Contesting just her fourth tournament after taking more than a year out of tennis for the birth of her first child, the 181st-ranked Williams will play German 13th seed Julia Goerges for a place in Saturday's (Sunday NZT) final.

Williams never was anxious about losing.

Wimbledon (CNN) Serena Williams may have been out of the grand slam game for roughly 16 months as she started a family, but when her back is against the wall - as one opponent put it last month - the real Serena still comes out.

"After the first set, I was like, 'All right, let's go three sets.' And that's kind of what I thought".

Williams stepped up to the line at 5-4 and brought up match point with an ace before completing victory when Giorgi could only push a forehand into the net.

Wimbledon 2018 -- Juan Martin del Potro reaches quarterfinals
Victory secured, Nadal climbed over the net and ran over to the baseline to help the distraught Del Potro back to his feet. Del Potro finished with 77 winners to Nadal's 67 but failed to convert any of his five break points in the fifth set.

And, after a brief pause, Williams added in a total mic drop moment, saying, "That's what makes me great, I always play everyone at their greatest, so I have to be greater".

Angelique Kerber is now the highest-ranked player left in the tournament. She was the runner-up at the All England Club in 2016 and a semifinalist in 2012.

On her own serve Rodina was tossed about the court like a rag doll.

Kerber took advantage of Kasatkina's 31 unforced errors, including seven double-faults, but took a while to end things.

She served for the victory at 5-4 in the second set, but got broken.

The Dutch star finally tested Goerges' serve in the next game and she struck a superb victor on her way to securing the first break of the match.

She probably should have done her homework on Williams, who crushed the upset-minded Italian after dropping the first set. But this nerveless comeback was a sight familiar to all who have admired Williams' warrior instincts throughout a Wimbledon career stretching back 20 years. She missed a year ago because of her pregnancy but is on an 18-match winning run at the All England Club.

Kerber and Kasatkina are the only two women to reach the second week at all three majors this year.

Kerber needed seven match points to close out No. 14 Daria Kasatkina of Russian Federation 6-3, 7-5 at Centre Court, while Ostapenko defeated 2014 Australian Open runner-up Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia 7-5, 6-4 at a windy No. 1 Court.
