An Illinois man captured on a viral cell phone video harassing a woman for wearing a shirt that featured the Puerto Rican flag has been charged with a felony hate crime, the Chicago Tribune reported.

"After a review of the case, we approved felony hate crimes charges", said Robert Foley, spokesman for the Cook County State's Attorney's Office. Trybus was arrested and charged with assault and disorderly conduct.

Irizarry said she received an apology from the forest preserve shortly after she posted the video. "The United States of America is a nation that was built and thrives on diversity". She said she was thankful officials recognized the behavior of the officer was wrong. I do not feel comfortable with him here.

And, while most police officers would have done the right thing in that incident, this guy was caught on tape doing the wrong thing, or more accurately, doing nothing, at all.

At one point Irizzary's brother returns from grabbing food for the party and tries to get Trybus to leave her alone.

"It was truly appalling, gut wrenching and a real wake up call", Cook County Commissioner Luis Arroyo Jr. said.

Puerto Rico is a US territory and its residents are USA citizens, yet Trybus, who is white, told Irizarry that "if you're an American citizen, you should not be wearing that". "The investigation is ongoing and the officer involved has been assigned to desk duty pending the outcome". Connor is seen walking away. The video, posted on Facebook, has been viewed more than 1.2 million times.

Those Trump-voting states are all home to Democratic senators who will face intense pressure to support the President's nominee . And his writings raise serious concerns about whether he would be an independent check on presidential abuse of power.

More police arrive and Irizarry says she still doesn't feel safe.

My wife and I wanted to let her know that we support her and we admire her.

One of the other responding officers tells Trybus that he can't be harassing people, adding that people have just as much right to be in the park as he does. Other officers eventually arrived and arrested the man.

Ricardo Rossello, the governor of Puerto Rico, wants the officer fired.

In a statement announcing Connor's resignation, officials with the Forest Preserve District of Cook County said that they planned to further address "aspects of this incident" and that they would not provide additional details until Thursday. Puerto Rican residents have been American citizens since 1917 and have the right to vote in United States presidential primaries, but not in presidential elections.
