Jubilant Croatian fans honked their vehicle horns and let off fireworks while England fans sobbed and looked to the future with confidence after Mario Mandzukic's extra-time victor took Croatia to its first World Cup final.

While Croatia fans began celebrating into the night in wild scenes of fireworks and frivolity in capital city Zagreb, their England counterparts walked home leaving a deserted mess of empty bottles and unwanted flags.

When the final whistle blew, the Croatians ran straight to their fans, jumping into the sea of red and white. "No trophy this time but it feels like the start of something every Englishman could get used to".

But even though England are out, they've still had an unbelievable tournament.

However, fans said the side had "finished further than anyone dreamed".

They had only previously been in the World Cup semi-finals in 1966, when they won the title on home soil, and 1990 so Southgate said he was trying to balance his pride in his young team with remembering how rare such chances are.
